We are movie stars!

Making a movie in Room 2

Today Learning Media made a movie at our school for the Ministry of Education, not only was it at our school but they also filmed us in our classroom doing reading and inquiry and they interviewed Whaea Emma!

There was a man who was asking the questions, a camera man, a sound man who held a boom and a microphone and also a lady who was the boss. They each had a job and when they put them all together they made a movie about us!

This is the photo we took of them setting up the lights and the camera.
First they interviewed Whaea Emma and Miss Leona in the resource room before school and we had to be really quiet in the corridor, it was so hard because we were so excited.

Next they filmed Whaea Emma and Miss Williams having a talk at morning tea time (we thought that was a bit funny). Then they filmed Room 2 doing reading. It was really exciting but sometimes when you are making a movie you have to redo things they call it 'Take 1' and 'Take 2' and it got a little bit boring.

It all gets recorded onto this.
In the afternoon they filmed us doing our Inquiry into the storm water drains with Room 7 and it was good fun because we got to show them our models, our designs and our plans for the big solution. They were very impressed!

Then after school they filmed Whaea Emma talking to Boston and Marcel's Mums and Ernesto got to hold the huge microphone with the sock on it.

The boss lady took heaps of photos and she said she will email them to Whaea Emma and we will put some more up on the blog later on when we get them.

There are really interesting and exciting things about making a movie and some boring things but most of us either want to be actors or camera operators when we grow up now so we must have really liked it!

Young designers down to business!

Time to Design!

We have decided that painting the ground around the drains in a way that both juniors (visual) and seniors (a written message) will understand is the best solution.

So down to the designing!

We sketched straight onto a black and white print out of the actual drain that we will TAKE ACTION on then we used pastels to show the colours that we would prefer to use. It was great fun and some incredible designs and slogans have come out of the big ideas session. One that really stood out to us was Cassidy's 'Think before you throw, this leads to the sea you know!'

We will vote tomorrow on the best design and the best slogan and then write a proposal letter which will include the projected costs to Whaea Barb and the Board of Trustees.

Keep you posted...

Drain, Drain problem go away...

A Pearler of a Problem

We understand now that we don't want to swim in the basin because of the pollution that makes it to the basin through storm water drains. It is sad but true and even at school we can see people have slipped chip packets down the grate of the storm water drains!
Last week we learned how storm water drains work and we even made our own with plastic containers as collection points and straws as the drains. This week it is our Job to research and brainstorm all the possible solutions that we can come up with to solve this problem.

We created a pearltree to help us to organise our solutions and research. At the moment the leading solutions are painting a message on the concrete around the drains to remind people and creating posters for each class to make people aware. We will keep you posted about how our solutions are taking shape and what we decide to do and why!

Looking more closely at OUR part in the water cycle

Collaborating with Room 7 has been a treat!

We have joined forces with Room 7 to do our mini inquiry into a specific problem with water. When we were on our school trip to Panmure Basin Juanpablo asked if he could go for a swim and then he looked into the water and said NO THANKS!! This helped to shape our mini inquiry.

Why don't we want to swim in the Basin? How did the pollution happen? What have the storm water drain outlets at the Basin go to do with all this? What can WE do about it?
We poured water and watched how the placement of storm water drains allow them the work

Firstly we need to figure out how a storm water drain works.

We saw rubbish down the drain and wondered where it would end up

We enjoyed thinking and talking about what happens when water goes down a storm water drain

Next we planned, constructed and tested out our own storm water drain models. Check out the photos.

Awesome collaboration between these two classes of budding engineers and environmentalists. What a beautiful future we have before us with these inspiring children!

Smile!

Class Photo day at S.P.S.

Nikki getting measured!

Today was class photo day at Sylvia Park school and it was so much fun. At 9.30am we lined up in height order with our polo shirts straight and neat, socks pulled up and hair brushed. First we were measured to see how tall we are and were given a sticker for our arm that said our name and height.
Next we lined up beside the camera lady and waited for our turn. When it was our turn we had to pose standing up, to the side, and sitting down. We felt like models!
We can't wait until it is time for us to get our photos and see how beautiful we look.
Waiting patiently with our stickers on.
The lady who measured how tall we are put a sticker on us!
