Julius Korey on Ernest Rutherford

My science book - a ticket to new learning.
A Blog Post by Julius Korey

My book that I read this week with my reading group was about four great scientists. In this blog post I will be writing about Ernest Rutherford one of the greatest scientists in New Zealand. There might even be a picture of him in your pocket right now. We are doing a science inquiry at the moment and I am really engaged in it - which has got me thinking… am I the next Ernest Rutherford?

Ernest Rutherford was the first person to create a nuclear reaction. Which is when an atom (a nuclear structure) is mixed with a subatomic particle (such as a proton or neutron) and it splits. He did this using his machine that he invented to fire alpha particles.

This all sounds very complex, like a complex sentence, but if you are passionate about something and focus hard on it you can do anything. Even split an atom.

It's time to investigate.

Room 17’s Scientific Method

                                                           by Julius and Golpy
1. Ask a question.
(example - What is the effect of the energy from the sun on coloured containers?)
2. Form a hypothesis
(make an educated guess)
3.  Test your hypothesis
(design an experiment that will see if you are right)
4.Gather data.
(record the data - measurable numbers or observations)
5. What did you notice?
(What does the data tell you?)
6.Write conclusion
(Combine your data and statements about what you have learned into a clear summary)
7.Share results.
(Share your learning with others)

Being Sunsmart is a serious business

Talking to a Melanoma Survivor
We phoned Whaea Emma’s Aunty and put her on speaker to ask her some questions and listen to her story.

What is Aunty Sarah’s Story?

  • She got Melanoma
  • She was 23 when she got it
  • She had a mole at the back of her leg
  • It all started with that mole
  • It wasn’t even itchy
  • She went to the doctor early
  • They had to cut the mole off
  • She was very lucky
  • she is a survivor

What have we learned from talking to her?

  • Cover up when you go in the sun
  • Don’t stay in the sun too long
  • Check the weather and be prepared
  • Check the UV rating
  • look after your skin because you only get one
  • Stay in the shade
  • Wear the right clothing
  • be careful in the sun
  • Don’t underestimate the sun
  • Check suspicious moles with the mole doctor
  • Any changes to your skin see the doctor

It's Conservation Week... here is what you can do!

Room 17’s Summary of Recommendations for
Conservation Week 2014

Discover the world where you live

Throughout the week we have been reading and writing about conservation and sustainability topics. We are also learning to summarise at the moment, so here are a collection of summaries made into recommendations for the humans that we share this planet with.

Recommendation

Reason for this recommendation

Name

Never ever put anything but water down a storm water drain.
I read that it can get clogged and it leads to the sea and it will kill the fish if they come in contact with it.
Danina
Don’t squash Bees
I read that less bees mean less honey.
Jayden
Don’t destroy forests
I read that if we continue to destroy and burn our forests species of plants, animals and insects will be lost forever.
Sione
Keep growing flowers
I read that to grow more flowers so we can make honey and beewax.
Nidhi
Don’t kill Bees
I read that bees are responsible for pollinating about one-sixth of the flowering plant species.
Ayen
Making waste
I read that rubbish is harming earth. When it breaks down, chemicals can release and pollute the ground.
Monica
Stop Wasting Water
I read that more water we use, the less money we have to pay for bills.
Mitchy
Don’t use a lot of electricity
I read that if the more electricity you use the more you have to pay for it and the more energy it takes to make it.
Emily
Make your own honey
I have read that you can make your own honey and you can stop wasting your money, wasting plastic packaging and the carbon it takes to drive the track to deliver the honey to the supermarket.
Nidhi
Trained and competent captains and navigation officers for all cargo ships. Fully equipped ships with working navigation systems.
I have read that the captains of the Rena Ship caused the horrific spill of the oil because they didn't have any maps and when the system was going down they thought it would be fine “NO” it wasn't so make sure you be prepared before you leave anywhere.
Adriana and Julius
Don’t waste a lot of food
I read that if you have a lot of food don’t go and buy some more - eat what you have and save the energy it takes to grow it (and petrol it takes to drive to the supermarket)!
Emily
The Future
I read that people share earth with millions of species and the way we live could affect their living.
Mitchy
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
I have read that people should reuse the amount of things that are made from trees because the more you waste the less oxygen.
Eneio
Pick up rubbish and put it in the bin
I read a story where Jack and Kate chucked rubbish into the drain and it got clogged and it overflowed and they had to get a digger and pull out the rubbish.
David
Do not  pick flowers
I read that to not pick flowers so bees can feed and make honey and beeswax.
Nidhi
Leave cats inside
Cats kill more native animals than rats and mice so leave your cats inside so that they can leave our native birds alone!
Adriana
Harnessing the wind
I read that the wind is a powerful force  we can also make amazing energy by being converted into electricity by wind turbines.

  1. With the rest of the people that didn't get any jobs, they can be the poster people, the hall organisation people and six of them can be the ushers.  on each door don't forget to smile.

  1. Next all the presenters have to draft what they are going to say but before that, they have to search up some things to talk about except for main presenters, main presenters practise what to say.

  1. Then the principal award people have to go down to each class quietly and calmly to give the principals awards out and then in 20 minutes you have to get them back. (Make sure you don’t tell anyone.

  1. At lunchtime ask Mrs Key for the junior sports award. then go ask Miss Magary to give the senior sports award.

  1. By then everybody should be nearly done drafting talking to you presenters.

  1. While the presenters are getting warmed up the poster people should start working on their masterpiece make sure they are big so everybody can see

  1. Choose a song to dance to and a leaving and coming in song make sure it is appropriate for kids like us.

  1. If you have a chance and have finished all your drafting and editing you could practise in the hall if there, if there are any mistakes of what you said make it sound like it was part of what you are going to say. That always worked for me when I was up there on the stage.

We shared our procedural with Room 9. Then Room 9 ran assembly and they did so well!!!! Here are some photos!

The Treehouse Review

From the 13 to the 52 Storey Treehouse

A blog post by Liana, Nidhi & Julius

This is a book by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton illustrated it.

Andy Griffiths.
Andy lives in a 13 I mean 26 I mean 39 I mean 52 storey treehouse I think…
They have so many levels I can’t even count them anymore. Anyway, he lives with his friend Terry and together they write funny books.

Terry Denton.
Terry lives in the treehouse with his friend Andy. Terry draws the pictures and Andy writes the words.

Lets rewind all the back to the 13 storey treehouse. Lets go back WHIZZZZZZ WHOOSH BAAAAANG as you all know Andy and Terry live in a treehouse that gets taller and taller every book.  If you had are reading the book you
will see unlikely chapters like the MONSTER MERMAID
the VERY big  bubble and if you're not reading the 13 storey treehouse  READ IT!
Lets travel through time again ohhhhhhh lets go
WHIZZZZZZ WHOOSH BAAAAANG ohhhhhhh we better
get used to this my stomach is downside up.

The top 5 dumbest things Terry has ever done in the 26 storey treehouse.
1. Tried to wash his underpants in the shark tank and they ate them.
2.Took his boa constructor to the movies.
3.Went rowing with his elephant friend.
4.Rode his horse along the beach and past the sign that said DANGER QUICKSAND.
5. Put jelly crystals (LOTS) in a penguin bath.
6. Tried to wash his underpants in the shark tank and they ate them.

Ok back to the story!
13 storeys later (robot voice)
13 more levels have been added now I can’t count wow um um um back to the time machine.
WHIZZZZZZ WHOOSH BAAAAANG

Andy and Terry added a trampoline without a net (Why no net thats so unsafe, well thats Andy and Terry for you).
Also a chocolate waterfall!, an active (not erupting now) volcano that is great for toasting marshmallows, an opera house, a baby dinosaur petting zoo, Andy and Terry’s believe it or else museum, a boxing elephant called the trunkianator (he can knock you out with 1 punch from his mighty trunk!), a not very merry go round, a X-ray room ( where you can see your own skeleton), a disco with a light up dance floor and a giant mirror ball, a high tech office and the most scariest roller coaster ever.

Lets jump in our time machine and go to the 52 storey treehouse.
WHIZZZZZZ WHOOSH BAAAAANG
13 storeys later (robot voice )
The last chapter the 52 storey treehouse.
Now they have a caterpillar that eats anything in it’s path.
Here are some examples.
He ate 2 steam rollers, 3 rhinos, 4 inflatable wavy men and 5 giant mutant spiders.

Why have we been reading this series?
In Room 17 Whaea Emma reads to us after lunch while we drink our milk. It is hard sometimes to not spit the milk out because Whaea Emma does all the voices - including Captain Wooden Head. It is important to listen to and read stories everyday because it’s funny, you start to LOVE books, you can grow your imagination and crack up with your teacher.

OUR THOUGHTS ON THE STORYS

13
Julius: I thought that Andy and Terry did a great job, they made the 13 storey tree house seem funny, immature and really really stupid.
Liana: I think that that was one of the most coolest books that I have ever read and I would definitely recommend it to other people also I love how everything is just so crazy if you have or have seen this book definitely read it!

Nidhi: I think I like this book and this book is the most funny book have ever heard of.

26
Julius: 26 is just as funny as the 13 storey it is so funny you can die from laughter the 26 story that includes funny stuff funny Andy and Terry hahahaha.

Liana: I think that  was a funny book but not as thrilling as the first and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Nidhi: I like it and i think it is cool and very funny.

39
Julius: I liked it but not as cool as the 26 not that cool.

Liana: I liked it and I think it was better than the 26 storey

Nidhi: I love it and it it is cool

52
Julius: It was really cool tune in next week because we haven't read the whole thing - but Whaea Emma has promised we will finish it by the end of the term .

Liana: I like this 1 the best of the series even though we haven't finished reading it and I would recommend it to everybody in the world!

Nidhi:I love it
